Quick Access Not Showing Recent Files In Windows 10


Quick Access is a handy feature in Windows 10. It enables you quickly access recently opened files and frequently opened folders. Quick Access, with default settings, displays up to 10 frequent folders and 20 recently opened files.

Recently, I noticed that the Quick Access window was not showing recently opened files. In fact, the Recent files section was missing. However, the Frequent folders section was showing up and seemed to work as usual.


Step 2: Under the General tab, navigate to the Privacy section. Here, make sure that Show recently used files in Quick access check box is selected. If not, check the box next to the option and then click the Apply button.


Quick Access in Windows 11 allows you to view the most frequently used folders and recent files at a glance. Unfortunately, for some users, Quick Access no longer shows the recent files in File Explorer.


Quick Access may stop showing the recent files section if you have disabled the Show recently opened items in Start, Jump List, and File Explorer option in Settings. This is a conflicting situation, as enabling this option will also turn on the recommended section in the Start menu and make it look organized.


If you want to see only your pinned folders, you can turn off recent files or frequent folders. Go to the View tab, and then select Options. In the Privacy section, clear the check boxes and select Apply. Now Quick access will only show your pinned folders. (If you turn them back on, items you previously removed from Quick access might show up again.)


Quick Access on Windows 10 is a really easy way to find and access a range of different content on your computer from the File Explorer. Quick Access is enabled by default and has a range of preset options to best cover the most popular areas and files people use on a daily basis. Normally whenever specific files, documents, images, etc are accessed, Quick Access will remember what was used and when allowing you to quickly and easily re-open the item. Unfortunately, there are times when this system fails and Quick Access stops storing Recent Files. Thankfully, there are a few things you can do to fix the issue, so follow along as this article guides you through them.


Finally, in the new window that appears, make sure Show recently used files in Quick Access is enabled. Now simply click Apply, then Ok and everything should be in working order again.


To do this, type Folder Explorer Options into the Start menu, then select it when the option appears. Now in the new window that opens stay on the General tab and set Open File Explorer to: This PC. Once you have made the change, close the window, Restart your computer the repeat the process, only this time change Open File Explorer to: Quick Access. This will reset Quick Access and allow you to view recently used files once again.


To do this, type Folder Explorer Options into the Start menu, then select it when the option appears. Now in the new window that opens stay on the General tab and click Clear next to Clear File Explorer History. For good measure Restart your computer and Recently used files should be showing again.


Within the published application File Explorer, Recent files do not show up in Quick access. Therefor I think documents (especially PDF files) can't be found, within the Recent file when attaching a file.


When I as administrator log in to the server and open some Word\PDF files, they show up in the Recent files list, but I had to enable Show recently opened items in jump lists on start or the taskbar within Settings. This sets SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Start_TrackDocs:0x00000001, but when I set this registry key for the users, it has no effect.


I am doing some more testing and when copying the shortcut files (.lnk-files) from the administrator to an another user accounts Recent folder, the files show up in the Recent files list in Quick access and I can select those files from Recent items when attaching a file to an e-mail message.


I was experiencing this same issue with Server 2016. In my situation I was using redirected folders and Citrix profile management to handle profiles. I redirected APPDATA, but I found that %appdata%\microsoft\windows\Recent did not redirect to the home drive. The fix was to manually change the Recent Shell Folder to the redirected path. For me it was P:\AppData\Microsoft\Windows\Recent. Change "P" to your redirected home drive path. To apply this to all users I used a registry GPO.


So I have a user whose recent files under quick access isn't showing any recent files that she opened/closed. I have this enabled in the quick access options and on the start settings, but the issue is still happening. We are using Windows Server 2016.


In Windows 10, you have to have "Let Windows track app launches to improve Start and search results" turned on in Settings, Privacy, General, or it doesn't seem to remember recently opened files. May not be your issue, but worth checking.

If Quick Access doesn't showcase permanently deleted files or folders, this solution is recommended. The truth is that you can't delete any file from its area directly. But removed files will not be displayed anymore. This is why some of you don't see them and think it's a bug. So, do you recall some special moments that would remove all recently removed files? For example, virus infection, disk formatting, partition loss, etc.


Try to recover deleted files and pin them to Quick Access again. All you need is reliable EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard. This easy-to-use software can get back recent files in only three steps. Quick Access is one convenient feature of File Explorer, which lets you quickly access frequently visited folders and recently opened files. However, the Quick Access or pinned folders may disappear from File Explorer.


PS: There is no guarantee that you will get your lost data back every time. To ensure data security, you can backup your important folders with AOMEI Backupper, a free Windows backup tool. You can set it to backup your folders daily/weekly/monthly. In this case, you can quickly recover the files you need when Quick Access disappears again.


Well, how to recover permanently deleted files in Windows 10/8/7? As for how to recover data exactly when the Quick Access not showing recent files problem occurs and how to restore files to Windows 10 Quick Access again, I will give detailed tutorials for you to refer to.


Acquiring recently used/opened files/folders through Quick Access, the new function in Windows 10 File Explorer (Windows Explorer) navigation pane, is convenient. I guess those people who are fond of this feature will be very upset when discovering Windows 10 Quick Access is broken or not working. Taking that into account, I feel obliged to help you out of your misery.


  • Go to View menu and click "Options" to open "Folder Options" dialog.

  • Disable recent files: In Folder Options dialog, go to Privacy section and uncheck "Show recently used files in Quick access" to disable your recently used files from being displayed in Quick access.

  • Disable frequent folders: In Folder Options dialog, go to Privacy section and uncheck "Show frequently used folders in Quick access" to disable your frequently used folders from being displayed in Quick access.


right click on the app in the start menu to see recent docs. I only just got Windows 10, and first was frustrated that the recent docs weren't right there like in windows 7, so started searching the internet for options and found this thread. Then I happened to right click, and boom, recent docs were right there.Example_start_menu_right_click


This new Quick Access or Home view is the default page of File Explorer in Windows 10 and whenever you open File Explorer using its shortcut icon or WIN+E hotkey, this new view is shown in File Explorer. It shows frequently used folders and recently used files list in File Explorer as shown in following screenshot:


Although Microsoft designed this new view for users convenience but most of the Windows 10 users don't like this default view. They find it annoying as they have to click on This PC link in left-side pane to access disk drives each time they open File Explorer. Also sometimes users don't want to show frequently accessed folders or recently opened files in File Explorer due to privacy issues.


Please understand that Citrix VDI hosted environment is different with original Windows environment or Windows VDI environment, you need to consult Citrix support for a help. On Windows Side, what you have done is enough, del %appdata%\microsoft\windows\recent\automaticdestinations* command can always fix issue.


In Windows Explorer, on the tool-ribbon, in the View tab, under options, select "Change Folder and Search Options," In the Folder Options dialog, in the Privacy section at the bottom: uncheck "Show recently used files in Quick access" uncheck "Show frequently used folders in Quick access" Once I did this, I was able to drag a folder to Quick Access which had only give me the red "forbidden" circle before.
